Liposuction is a surgery for fat removal from the body with the usage of suction. Thin, small, blunt-tipped tubes (cannula) are inserted in the skin through tiny cuts during liposuction. The surgeon moves the tubes around under the patient’s skin to target specific fat deposits, this is how the fat is suctioned out through the tubes.
Nowadays liposuction techniques are easier, safer and less painful.
New techniques include:
• Tumescent liposuction: for numbing the area of patient’s body, where a tube will be inserted, local anesthesia is being used. A big portion of anesthetics like lidocaine and epinephrine is being injected inside the fatty tissue before the liposuction is done. This type of surgery may not require general anesthesia.
• Ultrasound liposuction: With the usage of ultrasound this technique breaks the fat cells and makes it easier to remove. This type of liposuction is effective for neck area, upper abdomen, sides and back. No any kind of anesthesia is needed.
• Laser liposuction: This type of liposuction uses low-energy waves to liquefy fat, which is being removed through a small tube.
After the surgery, the area of the body that was operated is firmly wrapped to reduce swelling, bruising and pain. Elastic bandages and tape, support pants (such as those used to treat varicose veins), a special girdle, or another type of firm-fitting clothes may be used, depending on which part of the body was treated. You may have to wear the compression clothes or wrap for 3 to 4 weeks. It is considered to be normal to expect a lot of bruising and swelling for at least the first 7-10 days after surgery.
Fluid may drain from the incision for a few days. A doctor will prescribe effective medicine to reveal the pain.
Most patients are able to stand up and walkafter the effects of the anesthesia is gone. A patient may return to casual activities after once he/she feels better, although this may take several days to a few weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days. Recovery time may last longer if large areas were treated.
Why It Is Done
The main reason to make liposuction is to reduce body weight and reshape desired area of the body. Usually liposuction is used on those areas, that did not respond to exercises and diets. Such areas for women are outer thighs and hips and for men- waist and back. Commonly treated areas are: face, neck, abdomen, back, buttocks, legs, and upper arms.
Liposuction can be used in combination with procedures, such as aabdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast reduction or face-lift.
Liposuction can also treat certain medical diseases, such as:
• Benign fatty tumors (lipomas).
• Abnormal enlargement of the male breasts (gynecomastiaor pseudogynecomastia).
• Problems with metabolism of fat in the body (lipodystrophy).
• Excessive sweating in the armpit area (axillary hyperhidrosis).
Liposuction will not make a patient get rid of cellulite or stretch marks.
How Well It Works
In general liposuction is very effective for removal fat deposits in small areas. However, if a patient regains weight after liposuction, fatty bulges that were previously removed may return or appear in different places.
Improvement in body shape is noticeable right after surgery. After fat has been removed, it will take up to 6 months for body to tighten skin back in the treated area. It depends on patient’s elasticity of skin how long time it will take to retract skin.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you get extra fat at your abdomen, hips, waist area, you will notice immediately the result. But this is not the exact result. Within 6 months the result appears. The results are immediately noticeable if the fat is too much in the thighs, lower legs and upper thighs. If it is low, it is difficult to evaluate the result of the swelling that occurs the next day.
This operation does not restrict your daily life. You feel safe in the corset after 1 day of rest. The one-month period in which bandage is constantly used can be considered as the period of recovery. Sometimes doctors recommend to have lymphatic massage for the legs after the treatment.
The amount of fat removed is determined by the age and health status of the person. 2 to 3 liters of abdominal area, 3 liters in thighs, maximum 4 liters of fat can removed. The fluid lost while taking the fat out should also be given through the vein.
If you do not have weight gain and you are undergoing surgery for shaping, you notice a lot of weight loss. Those who have excess weight lose weight. However, the amount of weight loss may not be evident at first. If they pay attention to their diet after 2 months, they realize the difference in weight.
The shape of the waist, hip, knee, and inner thighs made for reshaping are prominent. But for the abdominal region, the degree of permanence depends on person's diet.
