What is botox?
Botox is a brand name of toxinthat is producedby the Clostridiumbotulinumbacterium. Small amounts of it can be used as injections into specific muscles to cause controlled weaking of muscles.
Doctors have been using Botox for many years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. For instance, Botox is used for forehead and frown lines between eyebrows to erase wrinkles, however it can be used for other areas as well.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox blocks signals between nerves and muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which makes wrinkles relaxed and softened.
Commonly it used on forehead lines, lines around the eye and frown lines.
How Is a Botox Procedure Performed?
Botox injections are made without anesthesia and it takes only a few minutes to be done. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with minor discomfort. Usually it takes 3-7 days to have a full effect and it is advised to avoid alcohol at least one week before treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should not be taken two weeks prior to treatment as well to reduce bruising.
How Long Does a Botox Injection Last?
Botox effect lasts4-6 months. As a muscle action constantly returns, the lines and wrinkles start to appear again and then the treated areas should be filled with Botox again.Howeverlines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.
Are there Side Effects of Botox?
The most common side effect of Botox are temporal bruises. Very rare the patient can experience headaches, which can last 1-2 days. The patient is advised not the rub the area, that was filled with Botox for 12 hours and lay down 3-4 hours not to experience drooping.
Botox is prohibited while pregnancy, breastfeeding and for patients with neurological diseases. As Botox doesn’t give effect for all types of wrinkles, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
